Before hiring a remodeling contractor, it’s vital to do some preliminary research to find out more about the company’s background and experience. Check their licensing credentials and look for Better Business Bureau ratings. If they have a website, visit it and read customer reviews. If they have professional associations, check their credentials as well. For example, a member of the National Kitchen & Bath Association, or the Remodeling Industry Association will have taken course work and passed an examination to become certified.

Another way to find a good remodeling contractor is to ask for their portfolios. Some contractors will have portfolios that you can view in person, and others have websites that contain pictures of their completed projects. A good portfolio should feature at least ten projects, with photos from before and after the work was completed. You can also ask to see their plans, sketches and blueprints.
